Touring the island's Heartland

A few kilometres from Kingscote, turn left onto the main road to Penneshaw, but continue straight on toward D'Estrees Bay. If you have started early enough, go all the way to the bay and try some beachcombing. On the way back north, call in to Clifford's Honey Farm, check out the bee hive and history of bee keeping on Kangaroo Island and try some of Jenny's home made honey ice-cream.

A little further north turn left to the Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Distillery where you can learn about a fascinating early Island industry and purchase some of their exciting products. False Cape Wines have their cellar door sales at Emu Ridge.

Turn left onto the Birchmore Road, continue on to the South Coast Road and all the way to Harriet Road, where you can turn north to the Andermel Marron Farm and Café. A fine place for lunch and interesting aquaculture industry. Continue north to the Playford Highway then east.

Continue east to Parndana but this time make a point of visiting the Parndana Wildlife Park, where you can see a huge variety of Australian wildlife up close, hand feed the Kangaroos, walk around the huge aviary, walk through the crocodile habitat and see the magnificent wedge tail eagles. Many other birds are a feature of the park.

Be sure to allow time at the Island Pure Sheep Dairy at Cygnet River, near Kingscote. They are open from 1pm to 5pm, and milk the sheep between 3pm and 5pm. Taste their premium quality yoghurt and cheese products, and take some back to your cottage!
