Touring the North EastKangaroo Island's north coast is dominated by high sea cliffs, broad sandy beaches safe for swimming, lush farmland and views across Investigator Straight to Yorke Peninsula. Heading west from Kingscote along the North Coast Road is Emu Bay, a popular swimming, fishing and surfing beach. Just past Emu Bay is the Old Wisanger Schoolhouse, a former single-room school house restored to give visitors a glimpse of life for rural children and teachers of around 100 years ago. Continue on past the abalone farms at Smith Bay to surprisingly beautiful Stokes Bay. Parking is adjacent a stony beach, but a walk east along the beach brings you to a tunnel through the cliff, where the path opens onto a broad sandy beach with a fascinating rock pool, great for the little ones. The beach provides fabulous summer swimming and at times good surf. Up the hill towards Parndana are the Stokes Bay Bush Garden and Paul's Place Farm. The Stokes Bay Bush Garden showcases endemic Kangaroo Island species as well as other Australian native plants, while Paul's Place Farm provides and entertaining and informative "hands on" experience with farm and native animals and birds. Return to Kingscote via Parndana, Bark Hut Road or Springs Road |
